On a recent trip to Tokyo I stumbled across KitchHike, a service that seemed to offer a new way to experience Japanese culture and cuisine. I was travelling alone and beginning to feel a little lonely in this gigantic city that was so different to home, I thought it would be great to get to know someone who lived in Tokyo and learn more about this fascinating place.

KitchHike gave me a chance to visit someones home, eat some authentic Japanese food and have some good conversation.

Meet Kayano,the cook
Unstoppable conversation around the table

I immediately felt welcome as soon as I met Kayano, she greeted me at the door to her lovely flat and after I removed my my shoes she offered me a pair of slippers to wear (a typical Japanese custom).

She sat me down at the table and from that moment on our conversation was great-Kayano's english was extremely good which is quite a rarity in Japan.

We talked about the sights in Tokyo, Japanese culture and many things besides, it was lovely after being on my own to get to have a proper in-depth conversation with someone.

Her love of cooking showed in the quality of the meal

Kayano has the kitchen of someone who loves to cook, a multitude of pots and pans along with other tools I'd never seen before.

And her love of cooking very much showed in the quality of the meal she cooked.

Filled the hole of the memory in Japan

As a traveller on a budget I mostly got my food from convenience stores and would occasionally eat out at cheap ramen or sushi places, this was nice but I felt there was something missing from my culinary experience in Japan - eating Kayano's delicious meal certainly filled this hole in my life.

Wonderful experience happened by chance

It was a great experience,I got to meet Kayano who has lived in Tokyo for years and she told me a lot of great stuff about the city, the food was excellent,I got a taste of home cooked Japanese food and I got to spend a few hours in her very lovely home.

I would thoroughly recommend the KitchHike experience to anyone - it made me feel at home in an distant city and I will always remember my meal with Kayano fondly.

"Saturday Healthy Meal"
Every Saturday night from 7pm I provide food from all over the world with Japanese style as a casual home party. Since I mainly use vegetables if you are looking for healthy food in Japan then this is the place to come! You could also meet with new friends here.  Drink is charged separately but you could bring your own bottle!

I provide different menu on every Saturday and one shown in a photo is an example from the past dinner.
